Some graduation sessions are special because of the location, the lighting, or the energy of the day. But every so often, one comes along that’s meaningful on a whole different level, not just because of what we’re celebrating, but who we’re celebrating.

This session was for my best friend, Sophie. We met while studying the same subjects in first year and stuck together through all the late-night study sessions, group projects, and everything uni life threw at us. And in 2024, she graduated from medical school!

Back in 2020, she was my very first graduation client. She’d just finished her bachelor’s degree, and I was just starting with graduation photography. I didn’t have any gowns or caps to offer yet, just a camera and the excitement of trying something new. Luckily, she used to live on campus and was required to own an academic gown for community dinners, and we made it work.

So when she asked me to photograph her again, this time graduating from medical school, it felt like everything had come full circle.

We started the session at the UQ Medical School campus in Herston. We didn’t spend too long there, but it was important to take a few photos where her journey to becoming a doctor started.

After wrapping up at Herston, we drove over to the St Lucia campus, a place full of memories for both of us. We started at Forgan Smith and the Great Court, two of UQ’s most iconic spots and always a must for graduation photos. From there, we wandered down Forgan Smith Lawn toward where we had parked, and along the way is the most beautiful spot during jacaranda season. On the corner of Mill Road and Campbell Road, there’s a jacaranda tree that perfectly frames the Forgan Smith Building. When it’s in full bloom, it’s honestly one of the prettiest views on campus.

Finally, we wrapped up her session at UQ Lakes. It was peak jacaranda season, so the whole area was covered in purple blooms.

Watching one of my best friends celebrate such a huge milestone was so special. I’ve seen how hard she’s worked to get here, so capturing this moment felt extra meaningful. It wasn’t just about photos; it was about celebrating years of effort, memories, and everything that led to this point. I couldn’t be prouder of her, and I’m so glad I got to document the start of her next chapter.
