Graduation day is supposed to be filled with sunshine and celebration—but sometimes the weather has other plans. Leading up to Hara’s session, I was glued to the weather forecast, watching the chance of rain climb higher and higher. We’d planned for a beautiful session at South Bank Parklands—the lush greenery, river views, and iconic city skyline would be the perfect backdrop for her post-ceremony photos.
The night before her session, the forecast confirmed it: rain was a certainty. We made the call to switch locations to the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC). Having recently attended a couple of QUT graduations there, I knew how crowded it would be after the ceremonies. The challenge was clear—finding dry, crowd-free spots that still felt special. I spent the evening scouting alternative locations and hoping for even a brief break in the rain to sneak in some outdoor shots.
Despite the rain and the last-minute venue change, Hara kept her spirits high. Watching her toss her cap and proudly pose in her gown reminded me that graduation isn't about perfect conditions but celebrating a remarkable journey. Sometimes, the unexpected twists can bring a sense of spontaneity and excitement that makes the photos (and the memories) even more meaningful.
The main entrance of BCEC became the standout location. It was far enough away from the crowds that we wouldn't have to battle for the best spot, and the stairs provided many opportunities for us to get creative with poses.
Hara’s session is a perfect reminder that sometimes the best memories are made when we adapt to life’s curveballs. While the South Bank Parklands will always be a go-to for graduation sessions for ceremonies held at the BCEC, I’m grateful the rain led us to discover the hidden photo potential of BCEC.
